Fun Continues at Pitt Race TTNT
After a weekend off, the Tire Rack SCCA® Time Trials National Tour presented by Hagerty continued this past weekend at the Pittsburgh International Race Complex in Wampum, Pennsylvania. The event saw 65 drivers record times in the three-piece competition. Each National Tour weekend is a two-day event with a party in the middle. Participants were welcomed to the event with a track walk Friday night that included a “pit stop” of food and drinks along the way.
After check-in and a welcome party Friday evening, drivers took to the 2.78-mile Pitt Race Full Circuit for two 20-minute timed practice sessions. After lunch, they returned to the track for their first two 20-minute, open-track Time Attack sessions. The day’s festivities closed with an all participant party sponsored by Hagerty. First thing Sunday morning, participants lined up for the TrackSprint session. Each driver got three attempts to conquer a section of the track from a standing start. This was directly followed by two more Time Attack sessions before trophies were presented at the KONI Podium. Final scores are determined by adding the fastest Time Attack lap from Saturday, fastest TrackSprint time and fastest Time Attack lap from Sunday of each driver.
Throughout the weekend, drivers were able to review professional track breakdowns of the circuit thanks to Racers360. That information proved helpful to competitors as 15 drivers ran lap times below the two-minute threshold—the standard of what’s fast for this track. That makes a difference in the results. In Sport 2, four drivers broke that threshold with Larry Faul Jr. taking the class win, just a combined 2.705 seconds ahead of Mike Miller. Jason Fabery joined them on the KONI Podium in third.
In addition to the placements, at each Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials National Tour event, three superlative awards are presented to participants who set the bar a little higher in a variety of ways. Claiming the Top Novice honors, from Max 1, was Bill Childers. Bill finished second in class and 15th overall. The Top Time honors went to Tom O’Gorman from Tuner 2 who set a blistering 1:48.907 lap time on Sunday morning. Finally, the Spirit of Time Trials award was presented to Brian Kuehl. He piloted his 200,000-mile daily-driven Honda Civic to the Sport 6 win, after towing ten-and-a-half hours to the event. He’s in the process of building a car specifically for Time Trials to be debuted soon.
With two events of the Tour completed, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Van is headed to Carolina Motorsports Park for the next round on May 25-26 before heading back west to Portland International Raceway on June 8-9. Find out more about these events and the complete tour here.
