SCCA Time Trials

New at Tire Rack Time Trials Nationals this year is the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge, the Grassroots Motorsports program designed to find, well, the ultimate in track cars. It’s a natural fit, of course, because many of the fastest cars in the country are already here at NCM Motorsports Park for the largest Time Trials event in the country.

For the first time, however, it’s more than an invitational. Typically, drivers needed to be invited to participate. That’s still true, for about half the field – GRM most definitely invited the quickest to compete.

“We’re excited to move the event to Time Trials Nationals because we kept seeing very fast time trials cars here,” Tom Suddard, GRM Director of Marketing, said. “It seems like a natural fit to have the Ultimate Track Car Challenge presented by Tire Rack here too.”

But this year, the 20 fastest cars on Friday at Time Trials Nationals who were not already entered in the Ultimate Track Car Challenge earned an invite Saturday night to participate.

“In the past we were invite only,” Suddard said. “We would invite 50 or 60 cars and that would be it. We have a pretty decent idea who would be fast when we’re looking at specs, looking at an application, looking at photos. But the real world can sometimes be different. So we’ve gone to this split approach where we invite half the field, and the other half can race their way in. In theory, this will make faster track cars, which is the point of this event.”
