Time Attack Challenge Las Vegas Season Opener Sets a High Mark

The Feb. 15-16, 2025, weekend marked the second trip to Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s “Outside Road Course” for SCCA’s Time Trials program, although it was the first under the new Time Attack Challenge name – and it landed in the jackpot, with drivers setting several fast laps and dropping the overall track record in the process.
The Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge season opener ran two consecutive days on the outside road course during last weekend’s competition, with the best time on Saturday and the best time from Sunday combining into each driver’s final score.
Making the weekend even better were the picture-perfect conditions – mid 60s for the temperature, and the jets from nearby Nellis Air Force Base ripping overhead throughout the weekend.
What Happened in Vegas
Clayton Yates and his Unlimited 1 Chevrolet Corvette was the class of the field, running seconds ahead of the rest on each day. Yates lowered the existing track record, held by (checks notes) himself, on the opening day – moving the mark from 1:45.333 to 1:44.025. He just missed bettering it once more on Sunday, posting a 1:44.410.
Tim Mason did the same in Sport 2, dropping the class record on the second day. Mason knocked nearly 1.5 seconds off his lap to set a new class best of 1:55.126, lower than last year’s 1:55.947 set by Cameron Goode.

America’s National Park of Speed
If you think Vegas was fun…you’re right! But if you’re ready for more fun, it’s time to check out Road America for the next round of the Tire Rack SCCA Time Attack Challenge, taking place April 12-13.
This stop brings four miles of fun with long, fast straights broken up by 14 challenging turns and hard braking zones. How much speed you carry through the corners directly influences how quickly you can go before the next one, and while that’s true anywhere, it’s magnified in Elkhart Lake, WI.
